New to the iphone, so sorry for my ignorance!

I have a Gmail account and can access it with Safari, but I cannot get my mail using the "built in" mail app on the iphone (3G) when using SO. It works when I use it with a wi-fi connection, but not when using just the SO data plan. When using Safari I can get my mail either with SO or wi-fi.

Is there a setting I'm missing on the iphone to get it's built in mail app to work with SO?

You have to set the Gmail account up as an Exchange account. Delete your current configuration. Then create a new account, but do not select Gmail, choose Exchange instead. Pump in your account info there and you'll be good to go.
