Hi,

I am thinking about buying an iPhone 4S, but will it work with SO???
Can I assume it will work as it works for iPhone 4?

I don't have a smartphone yet...I don't text or talk much on my cell so I am thinking about getting an iPod Touch instead. But if there is no Wi-Fi, I can't browser anything with iPod.

Please advise.

Cheers,
Claire

You should be able to get a an iPhone 4S working with Speakout data. However, there are things you need to do to get it working. You need an unlocked iPhone, or a Rogers branded iPhone. You also need to trim the Speakout SIM card so that it can fit in the iPhone.

sounds like you are in a similar situation as me. I am using iPhone4 on bell using their iPad plan.

Just go into the apple store and trick them give you the micro sim for iPad free. activate the sim. I am using the 250MB @ 15/30 days. it is data only but I don't talk or text(well I do talk and text but use google voice).

It is slightly more expensive than SO + UMB but it is a full data plan(can do everything). One scale up is 500MB@20.

I do have a 2630 with SO as emergency phone.

Thanks guys!

What about SO's unlimited data plan for $10 / month? Is there a lot limitation (I read another post with someone mentioning certain Apps don't work)?....I kinda want to avoid carrying too much with me although I carry a purse. But with unlimited data plan, I can then make calls with Skype....

@ Chimpanzee, I just checked Bell's data plan for iPad....and I can actually get a micro SIM for $5 only...which I think is a good deal, I suck at tricking ppl anyways...

Thanks again!

EDIT:
my micro-sim from apple store has a tag value of 0.01 so it really is free to hand out.

I'm wondering if anyone is using iphone 4/4s with browsing plan.

I am using samsung galaxy right now, and browsing plan works just fine. I can do browsing, watching youtube by using the youtube app, google map, downloading stuff from the market and much more (email app is not working though)

I am thinking of switching to iphone 4s, but before doing so I would like to confirm if apps like youtube, map, email are working or not.

thanks in advance.

email may or may not work on your galaxy, depending on what form of it. I am quite confident to say that hotmail and gmail works if you use the activesync option. standard pop3/imap of course would not work.

this is how iPhone's mail work on SO as well. Same thing applies to map. In fact most iOS app is done via http/https(and it supports proper APN proxy so the application doesn't need that) and they should work.

THANKS C.Ferguson!!! I used the gmail app for my email until I saw your post about setting up mail as an exchange account. Now my iOS mail app works, no need for a clumsy non apple app. So much nicer!

Yes, YouTube works. I loaded a video over 2 hours in length. App store works but you can't load apps. You can look and select downloads but they will not load. You need WiFi or iTunes to load apps.

Siri doesn't work on network data, even to complete voice commands that have nothing to do with accessing off phone data. I think Siri uses data to "understand" the voice commands like looking up the command on a master list at Apple or something like that.

I can confirm that my iPhone 4S works with SpeakOut!

If you want data on your iPhone on Speakout you'll need to go to this website to change the APN info in your iphone. It's super easy tho so don't worry. You just go to the site http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ , choose your privider and click install and it'll work.

Data works great too here are some data speed comparisons between Rogers and Speak Out Wireless:
Rogers time (in seconds)
Nytimes 11.40
Engadget mobile 4.09
Ars technical 4.27
Facebook 5.27
YouTube 4.15
Durham transit 6.04
Speakout:
Nytimes 11.85
Engadget mobile 7.48
Ars technical, 2.04
Facebook 5.40
YouTube 6.82
Durham transit 4.31

Map test (search and load hybrid view):
Speak out:
Paris 7.45
Berlin 4.95
Thunderbay 4.04
Vancouver 4.98
Rogers:
Montreal 4.43
Halifax 3.07
Tokyo 5.69
4.84

Thanks for your useful posts. Bell now of course carries a micro-sim specific to iphone 4s, and a data only rate plan (costs more than the ipad data plan = $30 I think). I'm wondering whether this would work just as well for VOIP and skype calls, or do you foresee any issues? Maybe the iphone 4s micro-sim limits app use to restrict VOIP and skype? Any advice would be welcome.

it is full data, i.e. voip works as expected(I tried SIP, no skype as I don't like it).

the only catch is how to activate that. you need to have an iPad in order to activate the SIM.

either ask around for a friend who has one or may be again trick the apple store boy/girl to help you activate it in store.

once it is activated, it is full data only(no restriction) plan but no tethering. I believe it is possible to make it tether using say android(don't have an adaptor for it so didn't try) but iPhone is very cozy with bell and just show 'call bell' when I want to enable wifi hotspot.

EDIT:
I don't know about the 4s data only plan, was talking about the iPad plan.

Any more talk of tethering and this thread will be deleted, and possible banning.

PEOPLE NEED TO READ THE RULES OF THIS SITE, AND ESPECIALLY THE OFFICIAL SITE, UNDERSTAND THEM, AND OBEY THEM.

Have I made that clear for everyone???

It is YOUR responsibility to comply with the rules against tethering given to us by SpeakOut.

I'm tired of people coming onto the forum, posting whatever they want with a blatant disregard of the rules. Read the rules BEFORE posting. Ignorance is no excuse.

DID YOU READ IT CAREFULLY ? I was talking about a BELL SIM for the iPad. What has it anything to do with Speakout ? and what rules it has violated RELATED TO SPEAKOUT ?

You may say it is OT as it is not about Speakout, but get that fact straight first !

EDIT:
terms of speakout

7-Eleven SpeakOut Wireless Unlimited web add on cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops or personal computers other than for the use of Wireless Synch.

does it say, DON'T MENTION tethering on any where with the term speakout even it is 100% unrelated ?

rule for this forum:
10. Do not ask how you can circumvent SpeakOut's rules. That goes with any device, or computer. DO NOT ASK ABOUT TETHERING, and similar items. SpeakOut only supports their devices, and we should not be discussing on how to "bend the rules". We should support SpeakOut because we know they are the best value in wireless, or none of us would be here. If you have any questions about legalities, consult the official SpeakOut site. Any more threads/posts about tethering, cloning sim cards, using the phone just as a modem, or how to bend the rules, will be deleted immediately, and possible banning of the people involved.

My reading is 'don't talk about tethering about Speakout', unless you only want to focus on the shout. In that case, just keep the shoutout part and remove the rest.
