I have to unlock it somewhere else ..I'm so confused. How do I unlock it? TIA

Just because a phone is cheap, does not mean it will work for what you want. It either MUST work on the carriers system which you want to use or it MUST be unlocked!

Check Google for unlocking if it's possible.

There are many phones which can not be unlocked.

Great phone choice, much better than the offering from Speakout.

The Huawei Y300 is one of the best phones you can get for $70, Stores have sold it for as low as $50, though it is getting more scarce now. It can be unlocked rather cheaply (less than $3) if you use an Ebay vendor. You have to give the Ebay vendor the phone's IMEI, and after some hours, or even days depending on how busy he is, you will be given a NCK unlock code. Pop in the Speakout SIM card, and you will get a menu looking for an unlock code. Punch in the unlock code, and you have an unlocked phone

If you want data, you may also have to program in APN settings, although if you have wifi, Android will call the APN settings for you.

If you don't mind me asking, at which grocer can you pick up the Huawei 300 for $70?

You used to be able to get the Y300 for $80 at Loblaws. The Y300 is fast becoming discontinued, old stock, it is being replaced by the Y330. The Y330 is much like the Y300, except the CPU is better, but the camera is lower resolution. I see it being sold for $80 at Futureshop and Best Buy. I am sure the price will be lower after a sale.

Thanks bridonca. I'm on my way to pick up one now. There's a sale at Future Shop. $69.99 before tax.

I have two Speakout phones, and I plan to use a SIM card from one of them in the new Y330.

I have never done this before. There doesn't happen to be a tutorial on this, is there?

Because you are buying this phone from another carrier, (Telus? Koodo?) you need to have the phone unlocked. There are countless cell phone unlock retailers on ebay, but I like this retailer because the unlock is less then $5 and is a Canadian retailer. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Huawei-.....462234c78f

You will have to provide the unlocker with an IMEI code that is on the phone. You will get an unlock code from the retailer after a period of time, which can be from minutes, to days.

To input the unlock code, put in the Speakout SIM and you will get a menu looking for an unlock code. Punch it in and you are set.

If you need data, you need to input some APN settings, but get the first part done first.

Thanks again, bridonca. Your advice re: procurement of the Y330 phone and the unlocking worked.

Now I just have to figure out how to get my Speakout SIM to work! I took one out of an old 7-11 Speakout Nokia C3-00 keyboard phone that hasn't worked in a while (I'm not sure if the problem is with the phone or the SIM card.)

When I put the old Speakout SIM card in the new Huawei Y330, I was prompted to unlock the phone, and followed your instructions successfully.

However, the old SIM card probably didn't have any minutes on it, if it works at all. The new Y330 won't let me dial out, it says "Emergency Calls Only," so I can't top it up. I'm going to see if I can top up the SIM card on the old phone. Otherwise, I might have to find another Speakout SIM card (perhaps use the one from my active phone), or maybe a cheap text-only SIM plan from one of the providers.

If the old Speakout SIM card has a zero balance for I think around 45 days, the SIM gets deactivated and is useless. It cannot be reactivated.

Rogers has an $85 a year SMS promotion, unlimited SMS and 100 minutes for the year, for the cost of a $100 prepaid card. https://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/paygo_promotions_monthlydiscount?asc_icid=prepaid_savings-on-oneyearplan_slot-2

I would get the $100 Rogers prepaid card at Loblaws when they have their monthly tax free sales.
