*777 doesn't work on non-speakout phone

A friend gave me an unused Rogers LG phone. As it has a few more features than my Speakout phone, I tried it out with my Speakout SIM. Calling and texting works fine. However, when I tried calling *777 to check my balance, I heard a recording that my call could not be completed. *777 works on my Speakout phone, of course.

Why would changing the phone I use break this?

Did you disable the 3G to see if it will work?

I dial *611 to get my balance. That do anything for you?

My wife an I have iphones, and we have to turn 3G off in order to use the 777 numbers etc. A bit of a pain, but we hardly call those numbers anyway :)

I just tried that – I have three manual network choices: Rogers 3G, Rogers 2G and some anonymous 3G. The first two both show the 3G indicator when I select them, and give me the error I initially mentioned. The third one comes up with the message "Emergency use only".

The *777 isn't that crucial. I can check my balance on-line.

Thanks for your help.

I've posted in several similar threads since Speakout started connecting to the 3G network that if you save *777 as a SIM card contact and use that contact rather than the dial pad, you can reach the "Account Balance" service. I've switched my SIM through several phones with the same result.

Sorry, I actually dial 611 from a 3G phone and get a balance, not *611. My bad.

Interesting I just fired up my phone to check. Dialing *777 and 611 from the keypad both get to the SO system today. It has been a while since I tried — but last time I did try they didn't work from the keypad on 3G but did either on 2G or from a SIM contact..
