I called Customer Service and they stated that there is only the $10 fee if you want to change your number to another local number; if you change your number to a different area code there is no charge.

Hi, manny is not selling any SIM cards. He is just letting us know that the area code on a SIM card is irrelevant since in most cases you can change it for free. Please check the other posts in the phone exchange forum for SIMs and phones for sale.

I had a number change from 416 to 613, no charge. I think I you want to change your number within the same region.

Also, I’m going to leave the possible $10 phone number change up because the official brochure mentions it. Therefore, even if many people have gotten it done for free, the charge can still be considered 7-Eleven’s official policy.

I suspect that the $10 is intended to discourage people from changing phone numbers frivolously, e.g. until they get a "good" number. It would be silly for SO to charge it to people who have moved (or in the case of Phone Exchange who bought a SIM from someone in a different area code) because that would just give those people an excuse to look for another prepaid plan. But what do I know? The revised FAQ looks good. I agree that you should quote the 7-11 brochure as the authoritative source but point out that the charge is discretionary and generally isn't applied.

It does matter for people who want to do local pickup, although in that case I suppose "location" and "area code" can be considered two different things. When I purchased 2 phones, both came with an area code completely unfamiliar to me. I called customer service, told them what area code I wanted & had them changed free of charge. Took them about 2 minutes to accomplish.

Yes, this deserves a separate FAQ entry (and a "Sticky" in the phone exchange subforum.) As it is, the closest FAQ entry, 28, is misleading. Has anyone been charged $10 to change their phone number to a different (non-overlapping) area code?
