It will be interesting to see if Maps, Gmail, and Youtube will work out of the box with Speakout UMB, because this phone uses Android v2.3.6, which needed battery draining 3rd party apps to get anything other than browsing to work. The phone had to be rooted also. With Android v4+, when the proxy settings were added, most apps just worked.

If I hadn't spent my tech budget 3 times over and already use a smartphone I would pick this up to try it. Gmail should work through a browser anyway. Maps??

At least the phone selection is now closer to the 21st century.

Best Buy is selling the Chatr version of L3 for $90 till Apr 4. I don't know if you would need to unlock it or not or if you could unlock it for less than $15, but then you'd be ahead of the game.

I bought this phone through the Speakout Website.
You are correct that only the Browsing works with the Speakout UMB. The Apps only work with WiFi turned on. I have tried to root the phone to install proxydroid but none of the online "tools" available seem to work on the Canadian version of the phone. Tha being said , you can access your gmail, facebook, twitter , etc using the browser so it's not a big deal I guess.

I now use everything at OS 4.0 now, but I bet a mapping app that works on this phone is Here Maps, http://m.here.com because it is web based. I wonder how well it works on the L3's default browser and Firefox? It does not work well with Opera, and I am pretty sure you cannot install Chrome on this phone because the OS 4+ requirement.

Hey bridonca, can you clarify this to me: If we are using ICS (Android 4.0+) on our device, we do not need any additional proxy app to use the UMB with most apps? I'm personally interested in apps like Gmail, Gmaps, GReader, Whatsapp - do they all work? I don't expect VOIP (GrooveIP, Fongo etc) clients to work, but I'd be very surprised if that was the case as well.

I see the proxy settings in the access point settings, but I've never tried it before.

Regarding the browser options above. I've found Dolphin to be a pretty capable browser on slower android devices. I used it on a 600MHz Optimus One for sometime. Might be worth a shot.

Does not work well with Default browser or Dolphin. You can get it to come up and search and stuff, but the phone's GPS will not locate you. I need to figure out how to get Android 4.0+ installed on this phone somehow if it is possible.

I have been interested in picking up the Roger's version of this phone to use for it's gps function. I am more interested in using a computer-web based map to find the phone or use the internal gps to log the phone's location. For those that have this phone and have it rooted, if maps don't work does the gps still work for location tracking?

Some of these low end phones have GPS hardware that take forever to kick in, up to 15 minutes at times. I would install one or both of these apps when you have a wifi connect https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2 or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest to confirm a GPS lock in, and when you get it, then run Here from the browser.

On another note. I tried Here on the Dolphin browser with my BB Playbook. It seemed more responsive than the default browser, but the buttons were not as responsive, so I stuck with the default browser.

With my ICS 4.03 upgrade, I can run maps, get GMail, and browsers working. Text plus sometimes works, never tried GReader or Whatsapp. VOIP is still a waste of time, but then again VOIP over 3G is for the most part, a waste of time, so no great loss.

bridonca - Thanks for the feedback. I might give this a shot some time..
Being able to search GMAPs and get access to my Gmail is a decent part of a data experience for me. GTalk would be nice too. I agree VOIP is probably not a worthwhile cause.

Regarding the GPS situation - I had extremely slow GPS lock on my Optimus One. So it can take forever to the point of uselessness.
I had a similar problem on my newer Galaxy device, until I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.co.....?t=1563226 - it shows how to modify the GPS detection and I have had excellent success with it.

Keep in mind that Google Maps now has offline maps support - you can't search but you can browse the map at least. Another good offline mapping software is http://www.locusmap.eu/ on Android

most android device while have AGPS, the 'A' part is disabled by default

So for low end device(like my galaxy gio), it takes it lots of time to make the first lock of the GPS sat(including download necessary data all via the GPS link), about 10-15 minutes. But once it is locked, it is much better.

my xperia ray on the other hand locks super fast.

so GPS thus map works just fine on SO AFAIK.

Gtalk would not work but you can use nimbuzz etc. as proxy.

Well I managed to root the phone. Installed Proxydroid and used settings I found in the forum.. All of the aps now work on Speakout UMB. Very stoked. GPS, MAPS, gmail, tuned in radio, facebook, etc

Finally got what I paid for. I'm curious to see if Proxydroid will drain the battery quicker. Anyway, am happy with the phone now (for what it is, entry level android.)

Got the phone!

All the Android apps for Gingerbread work. I can even Skype on 3G or Hspda, but with no facing camera only voice/messaging. I miss the FM radio but I can switch to on-line stations

An interesting detail I caught on the phone box is that it was built for Koodo but rebranded to Speakout or debranded [did not check to see if it is just an unlocked phone]. I did not use the provided SIM as I had a data active Speakout SIM that I just simply moved to this phone.

The phone can also be forced to use 2G to save battery.

Battery seems to last all day in my use with data on [not just 2G] and no WiFi turned on [why bother with unlimited data for this price]!

It was shipped from what appears to be an apartment in Calgary.

I did not need to make any changes to the phone at all!

Fongo will not work as it does not do Gingerbread as delivered, GReader is no longer available [cut by Google], try Skype for VOIP - works!

I did not need to root.

GPS and AGPS both work out of the Speakout box. I have used the Tracking app in a previous Android phone and it will log but needs the data just for the Google map, which can be loaded later too.

I have used this LG L3 in Google maps with voice direction just fine.

I am getting the impression that not all of the phones shipped work the same.

Wow, thats impressive - maps, and skype on gingerbread with no proxy for data?

I've tried it out on my ICS 4.0.4 device following the settings here: https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/phone-features/need-some-help-setting-up-data-on-android-phone/#p26613

Things like Gmail, Gmaps, facebook, Google+, gReader (like google reader) work fine.
No chat apps work for me - Talk, Skype, WhatsApp, nimbuzz..
If anyone has any suggestions on how to get chat working (without root proxying) I would be interested.

To try and keep this thread on topic, I'll be posting elsewhere in the forum

Cheers!

I bought the rogers version, on sale right now at Futureshop for $90. It worked with my speakout sim right out of the box, no unlock needed and google maps worked as well. According to GPS status app, AGPS was enabled by default and it got a good quick lock on google maps (when connected wifi), no rooting required.
I bought this mainly to put in my car and use it to track the daily trips, locations my car goes to. I don't need real time checking, just a good app that keeps track of the location throughout the day. I'm new to this, what does offline map mode do? Does anyone know a good gps app that just maps the phones location throughout the day?

I stand mistaken. The phone works, txt messages, calls, says speakout on the screen and shows a signal, but data does not work (I thought it had as it was set up over wifi). Do i need to unlock the phone to get data or just root it?
