With the purchase of my new phone I received 3 months of free Data with Speak Out. I told them to cancel this once the 3 months are up. So what happens then , if I go online using WiFI will I be charged for this ? So if one uses WiFi then it is free but I don't understand how could someone go online at all if there is no WiFi service around ? If I use google play music with WiFi then I won't be charged Data when the 3 months are up ? What is the Data Plan needed for ? It is very confusing for me and I don't want to pay $10 a month for something that I don't need but how do I know if I need it or not ?

You should go to the Speakout website https://www.speakout7eleven.ca and register yourself there. Once registered, you can check how much of your 100 meg quota you are using. You can also add and remove features Speakout provides.

I would recommend that you do not rely on anyone to disable your data after 90 days. Might or might not happen. On the 89th day, you should manually disable the data feature using the website if you do not want to get billed an additional $10 a month from your balance. If you have less than $10 in your balance the feature will be disabled.

There is information on the website telling you how many days you have left, though only how many days you have left for the month, not 90 days.

If your phone device is using wifi, you will not be billed by Speakout, and you will not use up any of the Speakout 100 meg data quota. If you do decide cancel the Speakout data service, you can still use the wifi. You do not even need have an active Speakout service to use the wifi of the phone device.

Speakout 3G data is useful where you are in areas that had Rogers Cellular service, but are not close to a wifi hotspot.

Data plan is through the cellular network. Wifi is through your home wireless modem or through a Starbucks, McDonalds or other public wireless modem type service. So using Wifi you will not be charged.
Definitely follow the advice above and create a SO account and cancel data on the 89th day or before. They want to have you continue so they won't be following your request to cancel after 90. You will need to do this through your account.

I do have a registered account on the website. I don't see where I can check how much of the 100 MB of Data I have used. Where do I cancel the Data Plan ? I see
Current Value Plan/Add-On
18 days remaining- Deactivate
Is this for the Data plan ? So do I click on Deactivate ? The 90 days of free Data are not up yet , I just got the phone last month in May around the 12th .
Then at the bottom of the page on the web site it says " Add-Ons" 100 MB of Data $10 Activate . So doesn't this mean that the Data Plan was cancelled when I phoned and asked that it not continue past the 90 free days ?

On my account, the box called 'Current Value Plan/Add-On' is clearly marked as '100 mb data plan'. So did you sign up for one of their other packages? It sounds to me that the data plan is not activated.

So the question I have is: do you still get a data connection on your phone?

I did not sign up for anything, I just have the 90 days free data for buying the phone. I asked them to cancel this once the 90 days are up . I think that I have about 45 more days left.

Yes, I think that I have data connection because I download songs and games but do so through a WiFi connection.

It's easy to tell if data is working. Turn off wifi. Then go to Settings. On my phone, under Data Usage I press More and then Mobile Networks. There should be a check box for Data Enabled.

If data is connected, look at the triangle which indicates your cell phone strength at the top of the screen. You should see an H or 3G beside the triangle when connected. Try to load a web page to see if it's working.

If not working, then restart your phone, still with wifi turned off. (This should automatically create the necessary apn settings for you.)

I find it handy to use a widget called Data On/Off. I put it on my home screen and it easily turns your data on and off, as the name says.

I checked my Data Usage and for Mobile Data it says OFF. Chart for June 13- July 13 is 0.00 B used So I guess that this must mean that I haven't used any Data so far , just WiFi. I don't want to switch Mobile Data On because I don't want to pay Data charges
